Amish Draft
Can Muslims claim conscientious objector status when the have to registar at 18?

I know that there are Amish, Jehovah’s Witness’s , Quakers, Bahai faith and others who are against fighting in any war, and when they have to registar, they make a note of it on the bottom of the card they get at the post office. I’m not a Muslim but I know some, and wonder if they would be accepted ( if there was a draft, as consciencious objectors, here in the USA. Seems we are always fighting with countries that are Muslim, is a Muslim allowed to fight against his brothers in Islam? If there are any Muslims reading this, I would especialy like to hear your thoughts and feelings.

In the United States, young men are encouraged to use the website of the Selective Service rather than printed cards (available at post offices).

https://www.sss.gov/RegVer/wfRegistration.aspx

Jehovah’s Witnesses have no objections to registering, and in fact recognize that they have an obligation to do so as required by law. At this time, the Selective Service does not ask about an applicant’s “conscientious objector status” because this form merely allows the Agency to contact applicants and does not actually allow them to be conscripted.

In the United States, so-called “draft boards” are empowered to dismiss conscientious objectors based on their personal conscientious beliefs, and did not necessarily require proof of practicing some “qualifying religion”. Jehovah’s Witnesses were NEVER granted some automatic excuse, and in fact thousands were sentenced for refusing conscription. In recent years, Presidents Clinton and Bush have pardoned many so-called “felons” who were merely conscientious objectors among Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Though seldom misunderstood thanks to a prevalence of stereotypes, the Amish receive a detailed and accurate sociocultural assessment in this documentary. A group now inhabiting 25 states across the U.S., with a population that doubles every 20 years or so, the Amish represent a bastion of peace and pacifism in the midst of an increasingly bellicose and war-torn America. This program carries audiences into the Amish community, where Amish residents talk candidly (in interviews) about their lives, and demonstrate various facets of their existence, from baking via wood-burning stoves to cleaning apparel with horsepower. The film also incorporates trips into Amish homes and recreations of historical Amish dwellings. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Amish cooks don’t waste money on exotic spices or premium cuts of meat. They know how to make tasty meals on a modest budget, using ingredients that are availble in any American kitchen. Amish folks don’t care about fad diets, either. They insist on nourishing food that “sticks to your ribs”–food to build strong bodies that can do a day’s hard work on the farm. Most important, Amish people see the spiritual significance of mealtime. They know that their daily food is a gift from God. The Amish-Country Cookbook takes you inside America’s largest Amish restaurant to learn their cooking secrets. It gives you a glimpse of Amish spiritual life as well. Plain and Simple: A Journey to the Amish

Plain and Simple: A Journey to the Amish

$15.99

“” “I had an obsession with the Amish. Plan and simple. Objectively it made no sense. I, who worked hard at being special, fell in love with a people who valued being ordinary.” “> So begins Sue Bender’s story, the captivating and inspiring true story of a harried urban Californian moved by the beauty of a display of quilts to seek out and live with the Amish. Discovering lives shaped by unfamiliar yet comforting ideas about time, work, and community, Bender is gently coaxed to consider, “Is there another way to lead a good life?” > Her journey begins in a New York men’s clothing store. There she is spellbound by the vibrant colors and stunning geometric simplicity of the Amish quilts “spoke directly to me,” writes Bender. Somehow, “they went straight to my heart.” > Heeding a persistent inner voice, Bender searches for Amish families willing to allow her to visit and share in there daily lives. “Plain and Simple” vividly recounts sojourns with two Amish families, visits during which Bender enters a world without television, telephone, electric light, or refrigerators; a world where clutter and hurry are replaced with inner quiet and calm ritual; a world where a sunny kitchen “glows” and “no distinction was made between the sacred and the everyday.” > In nine interrelated chapters–as simple and elegant as a classic nine-patch Amish quilt–Bender shares the quiet power she found reflected in lives of joyful simplicity, humanity, and clarity. The fast-paced, opinionated, often frazzled Bender returns home and reworks her “crazy-quilt” life, integrating the soul-soothing qualities she has observed in the Amish, and celebrating the patterns in the Amish, and celebrating the patterns formed by the distinctive “patches” of her own life. > Charmingly illustrated and refreshingly spare, “Plain and Simple” speaks to the seeker in each of us.”

“Loss Forgiveness and Restoration. The Face of Christ illustration and the accompanying story that has changed lives all around the globe.First it is a truelife story of an advertising executive an artist and a pastor Joe Castillo and the way God changed him. It also tells of the many lives touched by this simple illustration.Done before a live audience the very first time it had a powerful impact on those who watched. This motivated the artist to reproduce it in pen ink prints. As an artist Joes struggle to make a living was suddenly compounded by having his wife diagnosed with cancer. They had no insurance to cover the mounting debt but at an opportune time a friend offered to reproduce the artwork on marble plaques and pay royalties. The sales of the plaques were amazing surely this was the answer to all their financial problems But the story seems to grind to a halt. The friend refuses to pay royalties on the artwork that is selling world wide and Joe loses his wife to cancer. It becomes a daily struggle to forgive the man who was profiting from his artwork and overcome the bitterness at the loss of his wife. The plaques seem to show up everywhere compounding his anger and resentment. For Joe it became a bitter symbol of everything that had gone wrong. If you have ever struggled with forgiveness. If some events in your life just dont make sense God can use this artwork and the story that goes with it to help you put the pieces together.”

Why Cows Learn Dutch: And Other Secrets of the Amish Farm

$24.95

In Why Cows Learn Dutch and other Secrets of the Amish Farm, Randy James offers an engaging view of Amish farm life, society, and values. An agricultural extension agent for twenty years, James works closely with the Amish farmers of Geauga Country, Ohio, the fourth largest Amish settlement in the world, and his narrative provides new, accurate information on the Amish and their farming practices. This richly layered book is a collection of gentle, often humorous stories about the art, science, and tradition of farming as well as a probing analysis of the Amish farm business. James includes helpful, empiriacal descriptions of Amish farming practices and delves into the amazing economic effiency of a work horse and the streamlined management and marketing system of a fifty-chicken flock. Accompained with drawings by Amrish artist Crist C. Miller, James recounts his experiences driving a massive team of Belgain draft horses, gathering thin cold sap to boil into delicate maple syrup. hand milking a Holstein cow, and praying with the family before a hearty midday meal. Why Cows Learn Dutch illustrates an alternative business model in which small traditional farms are able to effectively compete in an industry dominated by huge corporate farms. It will appeal to those interested in the Amish lifestyle and farming practices.
