Kaytee Pet
I am getting ready to hatch a few baby chicks, but I can’t find grit anywhere. Where can I get it?
I am a starter and I am going to hatch 3 baby chicks. I need grit but I can’t find it anywhere because we don’t have any local feed stores. We have Pet-co and Petsmart but the only grit they have is “Kaytee Forti-Diet Pro Health Hi-Cal Grit Supplement for Small Birds.” Will this work?
first off what ever you do, do not use ground egg shells. egg shells are meant to be feed to grown hens for calcium when they lay their eggs. The shells contain a lot of calcium and help to make the hens eggs shells harder and prevent health problems.
as you probably already know grit is small stones used to grind food in the gizzard after it passes the stomach. if you use egg shells they will dissolve in the stomach acids and not at all work as grit. also to much calcium can have very bad affects on baby chicks growth.
depending on what you feed you may not even need grit at he young stages of life. If you don’t feed them greens or treats, and only provide commercial feed then you don’t need any grit. the regular chick feed already contains enough grit in it to digest the feed but not enough to digest other types of food. when the chicks get older and are allowed to find their some of their own feed outside they will pick up small rocks for he grit and will not need you to provide any (but it will not hurt if you do).
I could be wrong but I am pretty sure the Kaytee Forti-Diet Pro Health Hi-Cal Grit contains oyster shells. This is not good for the chicks because like egg shells, it is used for layers to make their shells hard. Like I said before calcium supplements are not good for growing birds. Check the label, if it does not contain oyster shells then it will work great for baby chicks.

by the way do not use regular chicken grit, its larger stones that the babies can not handle(parakeet grits are the perfect size).
Another thing you could use is just sand (not treated with chemicals) or just dirt. I dont buy chick grit for my chicks I just use a cup of dirt. They will pick out little stones to use for grit and enjoy looking for bugs in the dirt and taking dust baths in it (plus its free).
so anyway, if you only feed chick feed you dont need grit but if you will feed treats, use dirt or small bird grit (with no oyster shells)
