Winning Horses

Don’t you think great horses make the competition look bad?
Don’t you think great horses make the competition look bad
I see some idiots say “Who did Big Brown beat?” or “competition was nothing”. Don’t you think that is an idiotic thing to say? On Kentucky Derby day you have to beat 19 other winning horses in their top form. Especially if you win from post 20 don’t you have to be a super horse?
Big Brown beat the most elite competition in the country yesterday. So how can anybody say that the “competition was nothing”. Winning from post 20, and being the first horse to win in many years with only 3 lifetime starts is an amazing feat.

The Art and Science of Picking Winning Horses $12.95 This concise winning strategy shows readers how to progress from pure betting and depending upon chance, to taking calculated risks, which entails knowledge and judgment. Readers learn how to analyze the real factors that influence a race and eliminate horses that have little chance of winning–narrowing the short list of winners and immediately increasing a bettor’s chances of cashing tickets. Hillis shows which races are difficult to predict (and should be avoided) and likewise, the races that can best be handicapped and where the profit can be found. The Nature of Horses $8.29 Horses have a shared history with man going back millennia to their domestication around 4000 B.C. Yet only in very recent years have scientists begun to turn the tools of modem science on this remarkable animal that has been so wrapped up in human dreams and legends. Now modern scientific research is beginning to explain long-standing mysteries about the true nature of the horse. How well can horses really see? What causes breakdowns in racehorses? How intelligent are they compared to other animals, and are some breeds smarter than others? Does nature or nurture matter more in creating a great sport horse? What causes cribbing and other vices? In this beautifully illustrated, compelling narrative, Budiansky tells the story of the origins, behavior, intelligence and language of the horse. For the first time, horse lovers will have access to cutting-edge research on topics of interest including new information on horse vision, horse biology and movement. Introducing the latest archeological findings, Budiansky presents a fascinating discussion of how the horse evolved as well as a dramatic and provocative history of man’s use and abuse of the horse from prehistoric times to today. In a revealing chapter on horse intelligence, he debunks the commonly held belief that horses are stupid and also presents compelling new scientific information on horse language which will greatly benefit the horse rider and trainer. Anyone who loves horses will find this an invaluable resource as well as a fascinating read. |

Where Wild Horses Run $15.49 “Hidden behind boulders, as still as a tree stump, Cougar is poised, ready to pounce. Brown Foal struggles onto the grassy bank and hobbles after her mother. Cougar springs forward.” This gorgeously illustrated picture book is dedicated to the wild horses of the Nemaiah Valley, one of the last pristine places left for wild horses of the rugged north mountain country. Award-winning author and illustrator Georgia Graham went there to look for the horses in the middle of May when they were still low in the hills searching for the first blades of spring grass. There she found fourbands, each led by a stallion rippling with muscles and jealously protecting his mares. There were very few foals because their predators are many. "Where Wild Horses Run" tells a moving story of how one band of horses grouped together as family to protect a vulnerable colt from cougars – a story of love and dedication that will ultimately inspire children with the hope that there are still truly wild places in this world worth our protection. |

The Winning of the West V4 the Winning of the West V4 $33.41 The Winning of the West, Volume Four. Louisiana and the Northwest, 1791-1807. Theodore Roosevelt was more than just the 26th president of the United States. He was a writer, historian, explorer, big-game hunter, soldier, conservationist, ranchman and Nobel Peace Prize winner. Drawing greatly from materials found in the archives of the American Government, Roosevelt has written a multivolume history of the border people. He writes in the Preface: For a number of years I spent most of my time on the frontier, and lived and worked like any other frontiersman. The wild country in which we dwelt and across which we wandered was in the far West; and there were of course many features in which the life of a cattleman on the Great Plains and among the Rockies differed from that led by a backwoodsman in the Alleghany forest a century before. Yet the points of resemblance were far more numerous and striking. We guarded our herds of branded cattle and shaggy horses, hunted bear, bison, elk, and deer, established civil government, and put down evil-doers, white and red, on the banks of the Little Missouri and among the wooded, precipitous foothills of the Bighorn, exactly as did the pioneers who a hundred years previously build their log cabins beside the Kentucky or in the valleys of the Great Smokies. The men who have shared in the fast vanishing frontier life of the present feel a peculiar sympathy with the already long-vanished frontier life of the past. |

Horses Never Lie About Love $13.63 Award-winning poet Jana Harris tells the inspiring story of her twenty-four year relationship with a troubled but beautiful, blood-red feral mare who, in spite of her troubled past, has a talent for healing and helping every human and other being she comes into contact with. In ‘Horses Never Lie About Love’, Harris lyrically recounts how this wounded, implacable beast nevertheless held a magical influence over the other horses of the ranch and how she eased uncannily into the role of mother after having a foal. In time she became the heart of the ranch – now thirty-three years old, she is a matriarchal presence without whom the other horses cannot sleep at night, and whose quiet wisdom transmits strength of character that transcends the thin line between animals and the humans they love. |

Horse: A Portrait: A Photographer’s Life with Horses $30.25 Horse: A Portrait is a collection of photographs and writing by award-winning photographer Christiane Slawik. Taking us on her travels around the world photographing horses, Slawik tells the stories behind the photos and about her personal love of horses. She writes: "Horses have been fascinating for me in a way that I can describe only with difficulty. This feeling and fascination I try to capture with my camera–this one magical moment that not only I can take home with me in my heart but that others can share in my photos. A moment that can be everything: Strength and elegance, dynamics, combined with wild and simultaneously gentle spirit. Beauty, innocence and curiosity and again and again the wonderful and permanent will to make it right to man. "One shouldn’t regard horses as using animals. They are so much more. These heavenly creatures are our partners. Infinitely patient, attentive, and always ready to give their life for us. They make us proud, they give us luck, harmony and inner peace. If we only allow it they even train our character and take care that we grow beyond ourselves. Horses are the most astonishing creatures whom I know." Through Slawik’s incredible photography and inspirational words, we view a portrait of both these magnificent animals and also of Slawik herself. The American Horse Council Foundation estimates the horse population in this country has reached 9.2 million, and that the industry’s economic impact reaches $102 billion. Horse lovers of all kinds love exquisite photography of horses, and this book delivers, showcasing multiple breeds shot in locations from around the world. |

The Unscheduled Dismount: And Other Humor from a Life with Horses $17.85 Renowned horse trainer Jec Ballou takes up her pen in The Unscheduled Dismount to reflect on flashy breeches, tattooed trainers, hormonal mares, disheveled breeders, and everything in between. Ballou’s perspective is forged from a lifetime in the equine industry and tickles both the heart and funny bone of anyone who has fallen in love with horses. Charming and witty, this collection of essays chronicles the often-bizarre nature of life with horses. It covers everything from an ordinary day at the barn to the frustrations of training and riding lessons. In The Unscheduled Dismount, Ballou draws from her personal experience to create these accounts. "Does this Spandex Make Me Look Fat?" provides a fresh perspective on the outdated, unfashionable, and sometimes absurd riding apparel. With tongue-in-cheek humor, "Greener Pastures" laments California’s lack of wide open pastures for the horses to romp in and roll in the dirt. In "Move Over, Hank Williams," Ballou confesses her love of country music, which is synonymous with equestrians. Ballou, both a professional equestrian and award-winning journalist, captures the ups and downs of this industry with a perfect combination of reflection and laugh-out-loud humor. |

Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep? Vol. 1 By Philip K. Dick, Illustrated by Tony Parker and Bill Sienkiewicz $24.99 THE BOOK THAT INSPIRED THE FILM BLADE RUNNER COMES TO COMICS! Worldwide best-selling sci-fi writer Philip K. Dick’s award-winning DO ANDROIDS DREAM OF ELECTRIC SHEEP? has been called “a masterpiece ahead of its time, even today” and served as the basis for the film BLADE RUNNER. BOOM! Studios is honored to present the complete novel transplanted into the comic book medium, mixing all new panel-to-panel continuity with the actual text from the novel in an innovative, ground-breaking 24-issue maxi-series experiment.

San Francisco lies under a cloud of radioactive dust. The World War has killed millions, driving entire species to extinction and sending mankind off-planet. Those who remained coveted any living creature, and for people who couldn’t afford one, companies built incredibly realistic fakes: horses, birds, cats, sheep… even humans. Rick Deckard is an officially sanctioned bounty hunter tasked to find six rogue androids — they’re machines, but look, sound, and think like humans — clever, and most of all, dangerous humans. Rick Deckard, Pris, The Voight-Kampff Test, Nexus 6 androids, the Tyrell Corporation: join us for the publishing event of the year!
”After I finished reading the screenplay for BLADE RUNNER, I got the novel out and looked through it. The two reinforce each other, so that someone who started with the novel would enjoy the movie and someone who started with the movie would enjoy the novel.” — Philip K. Dick |

Down Old Plank Road Nashville Session $8.51 The Chieftains 40th career album, DOWN THE OLD PLANK ROAD was conceived by Moloney as the long-awaited follow-up to the double Grammy-winning 1992 release, Another Country, which joined such luminaries as Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson and Chet Atkins with the legendary Irish ensemble. Recorded in the spring of this year at Nashville s Sound Emporium, DOWN THE OLD PLANK ROAD was, according to Moloney, a tremendously gratifying experience. It seemed like everyone in Nashville wanted to lend a hand and we ended up with enough material for a pair of albums. We re very excited about the second volume which will be released early next year and which so far features guest artists Emmylou Harris, Patty Loveless, Allison Moorer, John Prine, Joe Ely, Jerry Douglas and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. In addition, Moloney is grateful for the wonderful support of Nashville producer Steve Buckingham for his talent coordination on DOWN THE OLD PLANK ROAD. DOWN THE OLD PLANK ROAD blends authentic Celtic instrumentation, composition and arrangements. The album includes tracks with deep roots in Irish/American music such as the standout renditions by Vince Gill of Dark As A Dungeon, Lyle Lovett s Don t Let Your Deal Go Down and Molly Bawn as performed by Alison Krauss. Moloney first heard Dark As A Dungeon in Ireland in the 40s, and Molly Bawn is an old Irish ballad that later made its way onto the American folk scene under the title Polly Vaughan and featuring a different melody. Earl Scruggs signature banjo playing can be heard on Sally Goodin while Bela Fleck performs a medley of Irish reels with The Chieftains and joins forces with John Hiatt, Tim O Brien and Jeff White on the title track. Ricky Skaggs performs Cindy, while vocalists Patty Griffin and Martina McBride can be heard, respectively, on Whole Heap Of Little Horses and I ll Be All Smiles Tonight. The album s rousing finale, Give the Fiddler a Dra |
